3 Tips for Finding Cheap Flights

Good morning everyone! Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a restful weekend and are all set to another productive week. Since ringing in the new year I have had a little time to reflect on the things that went right and the things that went not so right in 2017. One of the biggest areas of my own life that I saw a serious dip in was travel. I have often joked with friends and family that I can be somewhat of a nomad because I love to travel and explore new places, and I'm known to always be on the move. However, that didn't happen all that much in 2017 for several reasons. In 2018 I'm changing that and deciding that I want to spend as much time exploring new places and being with the people I love the most as much as my wallet and I can afford to.

With that being said, today's post is about my 3 tips for finding cheap flights. Most of the places on my bucket list this year are not within driving distance, which mean I will need to plan strategically in order to check off as many locations as possible.

Tips for Find Cheap Flights

1. Plan Ahead: As soon as you decide a vacation is needed or have an event to attend start looking at flights. The farther ahead you are able to plan the better able you are to survey the prices across several airlines and websites to find the best deal. I try to make plans to visit someone or decide on a trip about 3-4 months in advance of the trip. This gives me plenty of time to check flights on travel website and airlines and set aside as much money as possible to pay for the plane ticket. Every now and again you can get really lucky and find a deal a couple a weeks ahead of your dates, but for the most part it will require some planning ahead.

2. Exhaust Your Resources: NEVER simply go to an airline's website as your end all, be all for booking your flight. Nine times out of ten booking through the airline will cost at least $100 more than using a travel website. Check websites such as ExpediaStudent Universe, and Hopper to find the best deals. Most of these sites will notify you when prices are scheduled to go up or down, which makes it a little easier to find the best deals for you. Student Universe is my personal favorite. I started using them when I was in high school and college to book flights because they curate their prices to give students discounts on flights that other websites do not. On my most recent booking Student Universe was $70 cheaper than Expedia and $100 cheaper than booking through Delta or American Airlines. This website will be your best friend when it comes to booking.

3. Be Flexible: Shop around before committing to a flight. Check different dates (if your trip allows), different nearby airports, and several airlines before booking. There is often a different between flying out of Charlotte versus flying out of Greensboro or flying out on the last flight of the day versus the first flight of the day. If your schedule allows make the most of those small opportunities to save money on the flight so that money can be spent on having fun on your trip!

Now that I've given y'all my secrets for getting the best flight at the best price, go book that vacation! Experience new places and new people and go to all of the fun places!
