Workout Wednesday: Holiday Edition

Hey y'all! Happy Workout Wednesday! Today I'm talking about one of the most important aspects, but often ignored, aspects of working out or training- RECOVERY. I'm guilty of it ignoring recovery days all of the time. I used to have a really hard time listening to my body and knowing when to take it a little easier at the gym once of twice a week. It wasn't until I pulled by IT band on my left side last year and listened to a friend tell me to slow down a little bit that I really took this seriously. It was then that I realized that I didn't have to leave the gym dog-tired and looking like I just ran a marathon every time.

Today I want to talk about the importance of recovery and my favorite method of showing my body some TLC and giving it a chance to regroup. This can include a really good stretch before a bike ride or a low intensity class activity such as yoga or Pilates. I started regularly incorporating yoga into my workouts regimen using the Nike Training Club (NTC) App.
Now some of you may be thinking I have never done yoga in my life and I'm not about to start looking stupid now. Never fear! As shown in the photos above there are yoga workout for any experience level, whether this is your first time at the beginner level or you're an advanced expert. The yoga workouts on the NTC app have been a game changer for me as a runner because each one is curated for a different type of recovery. Some are designed to improve strength and mobility, which does wonders for weight training. My personal favorites are those that completely restorative and focus on healing all of the battle scars from daily physical activity. I make time for the restorative yoga workouts most especially on Just Do It Sunday after I run a 5k. The workout stretches out all of my exhausted and sore muscles and makes simply walking around for the rest of the day a breeze.
If you haven't tried a yoga workout on NTC, I highly recommend it after your next long run! Don't worry about looking silly or doing the poses just right. The Nike trainers are there to guide you through and make sure you're making the most of the workout. Simply focus on your recovery and how much your body will thank you afterwards.
