Foodie Files: Homemade Turkey & Sweet Potato Chili

Those temps are officially dropping, feeling more like winter than fall, but giving us all the perfect excuse to brush the dust off of our crock pots just in time for today's Foodie File post. I love a good, hearty, homemade chili and whenever I see a new recipe the ingredients are almost immediately added to my grocery list.

The recipe for turkey and sweet potato chili could not have come across my screen at a better time! I had recently bought one of the large containers of pre-chopped sweet potato chunks (cutting up a sweet potato myself is no small task). When I purchased it I underestimated how much sweet potato was in the container so I had a bunch of leftovers to find something to do with. Enter turkey and sweet potato chili.
Crock pot recipes are one of the best because they are such low maintenance. You can toss in all of your ingredients, add some seasoning, and the crock pot will do the rest for you. When I made this recipe earlier this week, I combined all of my ingredients, turned the crock pot on, and left the house for a couple of hours to run errands. When I got back home dinner was ready to be served! It was fantastic!

With the holidays quickly approaching having meals that can easily be thrown together with little to no effort can be a life saver and allow us to focus on other things. Check out the recipe below and enjoy!


2 T olive oil
1/2 small sweet onion chopped
1 lb ground turkey 
2 cups of sweet potato chunks
1 can of diced tomatoes
1 can of black beans
1 can of corn
1 cup of chicken stock2 T chili powder
2 t cumin
1 t paprika 
2 t salt
¾ t pepper
1/8 t cinnamon

(For the seasonings, I normally just eye ball it and then test it out for taste, but if you need exact measurements those are included, as well!)


1. In a shall pan drizzle olive oil so that it covers the bottom of the pan. Add chopped onion and saute for 2-3 minutes.

2. Add ground turkey and cook through- this should take anywhere from 5-8 minutes.

3. In the crock pot, combine crushed tomatoes, black beans, corn, sweet potatoes. Combine ground turkey with mixture.

4. Season mixture with salt, pepper, chili powder, cumin, paprika, and cinnamon to your liking.

5. Turn the crock pot on either low for 5 hours or high for 2.5 hours.

6. Serve chili with avocado, sour cream, tortilla chips, cornbread, or whatever else you may like!
